Harry Kane Wins Ballon d’Or at 33, Ends England’s 25-Year Wait Since Michael Owen
Harry Kane wins the 2026 men’s Ballon d’Or at 33, ending England’s 25-year wait since Michael Owen. Discover how his 73 goals in 65 matches powered Bayern Munich’s success, while Alexia Putellas claimed her third women’s award.
The award marks one of the biggest achievements of Kane’s career. He scored 73 goals in 65 appearances for club and country last season, playing a key role in Bayern Munich’s success across multiple competitions. Alongside the Ballon d’Or, Kane also won the men’s Striker of the Year award.
Kane is the fifth English player to win the Ballon d’Or. Before him, Sir Stanley Matthews, Sir Bobby Charlton, Kevin Keegan and Michael Owen had claimed the prestigious individual honour. Owen won it in 2001, and no English player had received the award since then. Kane’s victory ends that 25-year wait.
His achievement is also significant for Bayern Munich, as he becomes the second player from the German club to win the Ballon d’Or. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge previously won the award in consecutive years, in 1980 and 1981. Kane’s triumph adds another milestone to the club’s history.
73 Goals in 65 Matches: Kane’s Scoring Record
Kane impressed the football world with his goal-scoring performances last season, finding the net 73 times in 65 appearances for club and country. His contributions helped Bayern Munich win the Bundesliga and German Cup titles. The team also secured the German Super Cup.
Kane scored a hat-trick against Stuttgart in the German Cup final, making a significant contribution to Bayern’s title-winning campaign. His consistent scoring and performances in major matches strengthened his position as a leading contender for the Ballon d’Or.
Lionel Messi’s record for the most goals in a single season remains ahead of Kane’s tally. Messi scored 82 goals during the 2011-12 season. According to the figures provided, Kane’s 73 goals place him second following his remarkable campaign.
Kane also delivered strong performances for England’s national team. With six goals at the World Cup, he moved ahead of Gary Lineker to become England’s leading scorer in the tournament’s history. The achievement also placed him among the top five goal-scorers in World Cup history.
However, England’s campaign ended with a semi-final defeat against Argentina, leaving the team in third place. Although England failed to win the title, Kane’s individual performances further strengthened his standing among the world’s leading footballers.
From Early Struggles to Football’s Highest Individual Honour
Kane’s journey to the top followed a different path from that of players who achieve global recognition during their teenage years. After progressing through Tottenham Hotspur’s academy, he struggled to secure regular opportunities in the first team during the early stages of his career.
He was sent on loan to other clubs four times to gain experience. After playing in the lower leagues, Kane earned his place in Tottenham’s first team through hard work and consistent performances.
He subsequently established himself as one of England’s most reliable strikers before joining Bayern Munich and building his reputation in Germany. His Ballon d’Or victory represents a major reward for the long journey and sustained performances that shaped his career.
Kane Thanks Family and Teammates in Emotional Speech
During the ceremony at the London Palladium, Kane delivered an emotional speech, expressing gratitude to the people who had helped him throughout his career. He remembered those who had supported him during difficult periods and concluded his address with a special message for his family.
The London Palladium was chosen to host the ceremony for the first time. The event also carried special significance as the award marked its 70th anniversary. England’s Sir Stanley Matthews won the inaugural Ballon d’Or in 1956.
Champions League and International Silverware Remain Kane’s Targets
Despite winning the Ballon d’Or, two major ambitions remain unfulfilled in Kane’s career. He wants to win the Champions League and lift a major international tournament trophy with England.
Kane reached the Champions League final with Tottenham during the 2018-19 season, but his team lost 0-2 to Liverpool. He also suffered disappointment in the semi-finals with Bayern Munich.
His pursuit of a major tournament title with England has also remained unsuccessful. While the Ballon d’Or has taken his individual career to a new level, winning these trophies would give him further opportunities to make history for both his club and country.

Alongside Kane’s historic victory in the men’s category, the women’s Ballon d’Or also attracted attention. Spanish star midfielder Alexia Putellas won the award for the third time after securing several titles with Barcelona last season, including the Women’s Champions League.
The 32-year-old Putellas joined London City Lionesses during the off-season. She had also won the Women’s Nations League title with Spain’s national team last December.

Putellas ended the three-year dominance of her compatriot Aitana Bonmati, who had won the award for three consecutive years.
The ceremony therefore recognised Kane and Putellas as the recipients of football’s prestigious individual honour in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively. Kane’s victory also ended England’s long wait for a Ballon d’Or winner and highlighted the impact of his performances for club and country.
